Date of Walk: Sunday November 10, 2024

Total Distance: 18.69km

Total Time: 3:23:45

This was a really nice walk that was super quick due to it almost entirely being on flat roads – important as you know, we didn’t want to be off-road where people might be deer hunting. We took the Jeep to the parking area on the edge of the Marlborough forest, and brought Landy back to the place we ended last time. It was clearly marked where the trail came off turned off the road we were on and snuck over towards Merrickville on an old road allowance (?), but we didn’t find/see the marker for 13D where that road joined back up to #2. The walk then proceeded through Merrickville, where we passed 13E – the first trail marker we ever saw on the Rideau Trail that inspired us to find out more and eventually start walking it. A slight detour at this point got us a muffin for breakfast from The Village Bean, following which we got back on trail and got to enjoy a couple of the local locks around 13F/G.

The stretch between 13G and 14A was a very nice rural-farm walk, with some amazing old limestone homes, and several large horse farms giving us lots of scenery to enjoy on the way. These roads are not super busy to traffic, but also not super quiet and the traffic that is there is not drving slow – take caution and stay as far onto the shoulders as possible. Most people gave us generous space and friendly waves along the way.  We really enjoyed the quick trip through Burrits Rapids, with some excellent historical plaques and information available along the way to read and learn about this cute hamlet. There should be a bakery in this village, but it was mostly sleepy and residential. Really nice bridge views as you cross back over the Rideau River to be seen. Towards the end of this walk we stayed on the road vs taking a small jaunt into private land as again, hunting season was upon us. Sometime in the spring we will come back to cross that corner we didn’t take by staying on the road.

As we got close to the Jeep we found a shotgun shell in the road, a fresh one that we picked up as a souvenir. This was a “sign” that  we should skp the next few weeks walking while rifle season was open!

I took so long to write up our day 19/20 walks and don’t have lunch photos on either day….I think we went to Iron Forge Pizza one day, and Goose and Gridiron the other day…oops….I will get back on track with the lunch info and photos moving forward!
