Date of Walk: Sunday June 30, 2024

Total Distance: 17.69 km

Total Time: 4:28:54*

*I forgot to stop my watch for at least 10 minutes when we were stopped at the end waiting for our ride.

Today we started out again at Spy Rock Lookout overlooking Westport, which is such a great view – empty when we arrived around 7:30 am, packed/busy when we got back to our car around 12:30. Glad to see so many people out and enjoying the long weekend! The first part of the walk through Foley Mountain Conservation Area was really nice, with a couple washroom locations for those of you in need 😉 . We exited onto N Shore Road, where my highlight of the day was seeing a deer ahead of us cross the road….followed by her tiny baby! They were long gone when we got to the point they disappeared into the woods.

The road sections today were fairly easy, which was a good thing because a couple of the places off the road…not so much. Some lesser travelled sections of waist high wet grass to navigate through, some large gaps without trail markers visible, and lots of thorny bushes. But among the thorny bushes, were a bunch of less thorny bushes offering FREE CANDY! I’m talking raspberries friends, and they are ripening in large amounts in these off road sections. We ate a couple good handfuls each, placating my complaints about the water. And the mosquitos that come with.

Along our long end stretch of road, I spotted some real hikers ahead of us – they had gear including backpacks and poles! As we caught up to them, we said hello and learnt they were Donna and Heather visiting from the Hamilton/Kitchener area and hiking the trail together. They take occasional trips out east to tackle the next section – they hiked the previous day in the rain, and were back out on this day with an end spot of 8G. They previously walked the Bruce Trail together – talk about an accomplishment!

Based on the time (it was around 12pm) and promised lunch with our friends who were coming to meet us, we decided to stop at 8F today, but never did find the sign for it. We walked a little farther up the road with no luck.  I think we will do a short 8G-8F walk and back next time for parking convenience. Maybe a nice Friday afternoon quick one or something.  Definitely starting to get hot on these walks, I can see distances shortening throughout the summer.

Today we tried The Woodfired Cafe in Westport. I had a pulled pork sandwich, Bryan had a BBQ chicken sandwich, and our friends had brisket and Montreal smoked meats. For sides, we had potato salad, and beans. Everything was mediocre – Bryan was the happiest. All sandwiches come with cheese and mayo which doesn’t really fit in most cases, and sides are very underwhelming. Excellent BBQ sauce, and the places has a good variety and selection of drink items.

Dessert again came from the Tasty Goodness Bake Shop, which is well known for butter tarts. Once again I picked up an apple crumble square, but also a mini butterscotch tart. Everything continued to be delicious and the taste highlight of the day.
