More what do you ask? More mushrooms and mosquitoes!!
Date of Walk: Sunday July 7, 2024
Total Distance: 17.81 km
Total Time: 4:01:49
Well, we parked one car today at 9C and then the other at 8G. We started by backtracking to where we stopped last time, somewhere near 8F. We “finally” found the 8F sign – it was about 0.6km further down the road than the waypoint marker from the kmz files had it (see photo below – blue dot was me at 8F sign, red marker is where the full map file suggested it would be) – it was just past where we stopped last week.
Most of the rest of our walk was through part of Murphy’s Point Provincial Park with many of the trails being quite well travelled (we still didn’t see anyone until near the end of our walk as we approached the Silver Queen Mine). We saw a LOT of different types of mushrooms on this walk. There are mushrooms all over the place especially between 8G and 9B – we took a bunch of photos, but this really was only a selection, and we saw a whole bunch before I started taking photos. I assume most are poison, but we all know I wouldn’t eat any of them anyhow!
At one point we came across the McParlan House and Burgess Mill ruins, which was a pretty neat site to get to explore. After reading an interpretive plaque on site, I found it quite sus that Reuben Sherwood’s poor surveying (for a lead surveyor) led to him “accidentally” building on someone else’s land (a woman nonetheless) and then basically forcing an after-the-fact reassigment to him. I hope Katherine got something good out of the deal! Anyhow, down the trail from there we came across the Lally Homestead and a very busy parking area – which led us to an awesome side quest – we arrived at the right time to catch the Silver Queen Mine being open with interpretive tour guides. We took the recommendation of the team at the entry to the Silver Queen Trail to check it out – what an awesome bonus to our day! Nice and cool, and a very cool visit inside one of the old Mica Mines in the area.
No Rideau Trail walk would be complete without a bit of a mud disaster, so the walk back to 9C made sure to give us a few super squishy-soaky try-not-to-fall-in-the-pond but also don’t-stop-becuase-MOSQUITOES check boxes to tick off 😉 We finished today just after 12pm, and drove back out to Westport for lunch one more time. I guess we will be eating in Perth the next couple trips!
For our third time having lunch in Westport, we tried the Lost Penny Pub, where we both had the Lost Penny Burger. Bryan had sweet potato fries. Awesome Burger – didn’t really catch a photo of it as I am horrible for remembering to photograph food when hungry! The bun was a bit weak to hold up against the massive burger, but delicious, fries were the coated frozen variety and well cooked, I just saved more room for dessert vs. filling up on mediocre fries.
Dessert again came from the Tasty Goodness Bake Shop, which Im surprised is well known for butter tarts given how AMAZING everything else is. Today we grabbed a couple Kitchen Sink cookies for a quick snack, and took home a peanut butter pie. I’m talking chocolate crust filled with PB mousse and topped with caramel, chocolate, mini peanut butter cups, peanut butter m&m’s, and whipped cream. This was so good, we have eaten the whole thing, even though our plan was to freeze and save half….we saved some for one day only. I will 100% go back to Westport just to get more treats from this bakery. Thank you Tasty Goodness!
